PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) – A 22-year-old carpenter working on a Plymouth construction site died after a nail from a high-powered nail gun pierced his heart.
Raymond L. Tassinari, who has an 11-month-old son, was operating the nail gun Monday afternoon at the Pinehills commercial and residential development. While shooting nails into studs, one nail “just took a wrong turn,” his father said.
“I wish there was somebody to get mad at, but it was just a tragic accident,” Tassinari’s father, also named Raymond, told the Patriot Ledger of Quincy.
Tassinari leaves a wife, Meghan, and young son, also named Raymond. He worked for Shawnlee Construction of Plainville, a subcontractor on Pinehills project.
Tassinari had worked construction for about four years.
“He was a good all-around kid. He lived for his wife and he lived for his family,” his father said, adding that his son often took the family on fishing trips to Maine.
Nail gun accidents are uncommon but not rare. Last month, a construction worker in Los Angeles had six nails driven into his head, but doctors expected him to make a full recovery.
Isidro Mejia, 39, was atop an unfinished home when he fell from the roof onto a co-worker who was using the nail gun. The two men tried to grab each to keep from falling, but both tumbled to the ground. At some point, the nail gun discharged and drove the nails into Mejia’s head.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death to determine if any workplace safety violations occurred, spokesman Ted Fitzgerald said.
