MILLBURY, Mass. (AP) – A car racing on the Massachusetts Turnpike on Sunday morning flew out of control and careened into oncoming traffic, hitting a minivan and sending an entire family to the hospital, police said.

A Pontiac Grand Am was racing another car in the highway’s eastbound lanes around 10:50 a.m. when the Grand Am lost control, went airborne and crossed the median, according to the State Police. The other car sped off.

The Grand Am collided with an oncoming Pontiac Montana minivan in the westbound center lane.

The minivan flipped onto its roof with a mother, father, their 8-year-old son, 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son inside.

The mother was seriously injured, and the rest of the family had minor injuries, police said. All were taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, but their conditions weren’t immediately disclosed.

A 19-year-old woman driving the Grand Am and her 18-year-old female passenger also were taken to the same hospital with serious injuries. Three other female passengers of the Grand Am – one was 21 years old and the other two were 19 – were hospitalized at Worcester Medical Center.

Police did not immediately release the names of the passengers in either car, and no information was available about the other car that was allegedly racing.

No charges were immediately filed.

Police closed the turnpike’s west side of the highway for two hours, then reopened two of the lanes around 12:30 p.m. Traffic in both directions was backed up for miles.
