Dear Sun Spots: I am planning a bus trip with friends to Boston for holiday shopping on Saturday, Nov. 12. I have 10 open seats at $25 per person. Anyone interested in this trip can please call me at (207) 375-8762. Thank you. – Alice Rodrigue, Wales.
Dear Sun Spots: I am writing to find out if anyone knows what happened to the Second Chance Consignments store located at 475 Pleasant Street Plaza in Lewiston? I had some items there and all of a sudden they were closed. The owner does owe money to some of us and we would like to get ahold of her. Thank you. – Anne Davis, Lewiston.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, sad to say the store has gone out of business. Sun Spots had the pleasure of talking to former owner Susie Crossley, who first wants to thank all her customers and consignees who provided the clothing and patronage. She says all were called prior to the closing to ensure they picked up their goods by the deadline. She has since been personally calling all those she has numbers for. Some she has been successful in reaching, others not. If your phone number is disconnected, or you have no answering machine, she asks that you please be patient as she works her way through the list.
Dear Sun Spots: Happy Red Hatters would also like to be added to the list of Red Hat chapters. I am the queen mother and can be reached at (207) 784-7732. – Carmen Mercier, Auburn.
Dear Sun Spots: The recent letter from the reader wanting the brownie recipe from the Cook of the Week column that featured Kaitlynn Hinson, is not a box mix. She was using a box mix at the time of the photograph because the photographer wanted her to be making something at the time. Kaitlynn is my granddaughter and the published recipe was one given to her by me and is a recipe from scratch. It is one of the best I have ever made and I have had several requests for it. The recipe has been published in my grandson’s school cookbook at Martel School. The recipe follows:
Cocoa brownies ingredients: ½ cup butter or margarine (1 stick), 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, ½ cup all purpose flour, ½ cup unsweetened cocoa, ¼ teaspoon baking powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, 2 large eggs, 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional). Method: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-9 inch baking pan. In a quart saucepan melt the butter or margarine (do not use soft spread) over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, then eggs, one at a time, and vanilla, until blended. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, salt; stir in flour mixture into saucepan until blended. Stir in walnuts. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted two inches from the center comes out almost clean. Do not over bake. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Cut into squares. Makes 16 brownies. – Priscilla Pond, Norway
Dear Sun Spots: I love your column!
I’m wondering if anyone out there can help me. I’m looking for an old fashioned rabbit foot with a chain. You used to be able to buy one anywhere. I’ve tried flea markets and garage sales with no luck. I’d be happy to buy one or pay postage. I can be reached at (207) 782-1964. – No Name, Lewiston.
