GRAY – A couple who reported an early morning break-in at their Forest Lake Road home Monday got the quick police response they had hoped for. But instead of a burglar inside the home, police said they found a large marijuana operation, and the man and woman who made the call were arrested on a charge of trafficking in pot.
At about 1:15 a.m., Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies were alerted to a possible burglary at 82 Forest Lake Road. Michael Guerrini, 36, had called to report that he and 26-year-old Katherine Moore heard someone inside their home after returning from a night out.
Minutes later, Cumberland County Deputy John Fournier was joined by officers from Cumberland and Falmouth on Forest Lake Road.
Guerrini told police he believed someone had broken into his home and that the burglar was still inside, police said. Deputy Fournier went into the home to search for a suspect and immediately reported smelling a strong aroma of marijuana, police said.
Police began searching through the first floor of the house.
“As the deputies were checking the residence, Guerrini became nervous about the deputy’s search for the possible burglary suspects,” according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Minutes later, Fournier and another deputy found what police described as a large marijuana-growing operation involving 125 high-quality pot plants. Police said they also found several used hypodermic needles and burn spoons coated with white powder.
Guerrini and Moore were arrested on a charge of trafficking in marijuana. No burglary suspects were found in the home.
