AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Three groups have filed applications for a statewide referendum to overturn Maine’s newly enacted gay marriage law.

The secretary of state’s office is expected next week to approve the wording of a ballot question. Then the groups can begin collecting 55,087 signatures from registered Maine voters needed by mid-September to put the law to a statewide vote.

One of the groups represents the Roman Catholic Church and Maine Marriage Alliance, and a second includes members of the Maine Family Policy Council, formerly known as the Christian Civic League of Maine. The third is made up of several York County residents.

Julie Flynn, deputy secretary of state, tells the Portland Press Herald it’s not uncommon to have multiple groups collecting signatures.
