PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Energy developers proposing more than $5 billion worth of projects in Maine say legislation under consideration threatens their projects.
Executives at three firms told the Portland Press Herald that wording in an energy bill might prompt them to shift millions of dollars in spending to other states.
Riverbank Power Co. President John Douglas said Maine could lose thousands of jobs and be bypassed by major transmission lines needed to develop renewable energy projects in the state. Toronto-based Riverbank wants to build a $2 billion underground pumped-storage generator in Wiscasset.
The Legislature is considering an energy bill that includes an amendment that effectively prohibits new energy corridor development in Maine until a special commission studies the proposal.
