Maine State Police plan to beef up patrols over the Memorial Day weekend to crack down on drunk drivers, speeders and violators of seat belt and child seat laws, a spokesman said Thursday.

Additional troopers and several special enforcement efforts will be tapped for holiday weekend coverage, spokesman Steve McCausland wrote in a press release.

State Police also plan to be watching from the air in the agency’s plane keeping an eye out for aggressive drivers and trouble spots, McCausland wrote.

Highway fatalities in Maine are down 32 percent compared to last year at this time, McCausland wrote. There were 39 highway deaths so far this year compared to 57 at this time last year, according to the Bureau of Highway Safety, he wrote.

Last year, three people were killed on Maine road over the holiday weekend and four people killed the previous year over that weekend.

“Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for highway safety enforcement for the rest of the summer,” Maine State Police Chief Patrick Fleming said in McCausland’s press release. The goal of the state’s police force “is to make it a safe one,” Fleming said.
