AUBURN – Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is pleased to announce that registration for the 2009 Field Hockey program started Monday, August 24. Registration may be completed at the front desk. Once again the program will take place at Auburn Middle School.
There are several changes being made to the program this season. Children in grades three through eight (Junior and Intermediate Division) will practice Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. starting Sept. 9. These children will play games Saturday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. The program runs for six weeks. Games will be a combination of scrimmages with other area programs as well as scrimmages with children in the program.
The Pee Wee Division has been expanded to include kindergarteners this season. The Pee Wee Division will practice Saturday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. beginning Sept. 12. This program also runs for six weeks
The program is pleased to be introducing a new curriculum being put together with information from the University of Maine at Orono and St. Joseph’s College. Players need to provide their own stick, shin guards and mouthpiece. Everyone will receive a certificate and a YMCA Field Hockey T-shirt for participating in the program. Breast cancer golf benefit Wednesday at Highlands
TURNER – The first annual Pink Ladies & Pink Men Golf Classic will take place Thursday, August 27 at Turner Highlands Golf Club. The tournament will benefit the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, which provides digital mammogrraphy and breast health services to people throughout Greater Franklin County
The tournament highlights include a par-3 Casino hole and the Beck 50/50 challenge hole, a barbecue dinner, silent auction, and awards ceremony. Registration fee is $100 per player or $400 per team and includes greens fees, carts, dinner, and the awards ceremony.
The Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center provides women with timely access to state-of-the-art breast cancer screening, diagnostic, clinical, and care-support services. The Center is located in the Franklin Health Medical Arts Center in Farmington and at FMH Outpatient Services in Livermore Falls. It memorializes a Carrabassett Valley resident who died from breast cancer.

YMCA announces homeschool program
AUBURN – Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is pleased to announce that sign=ups have started for Homeschool Sports. Homeschool sports is a 15-week program, designed to teach your child how to play different sports, get some exercise and meet new friends. 
The program will get children participating in some fun activities that will not only teach them new skills but will also improve their overall level of physical fitness. Some of the sports will include basketball, t-ball, soccer, and tennis. The children will also be able to take part in different fitness classes and will have a pool party at the end of the program. The program will also teach the children the YMCA’s core values: caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect, and how to incorporate them into their lives.
The program runs from Sept. 8th to Dec. 15, every Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the YMCA gym. Cost for the program is $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers. Each child will receive a homeschool sports t-shirt. For more information, contact Josh LaPrell at 795-4095 or [email protected].
Mountain bike race this weekend
CAMDEN – The Maine Sport RunOff mountain bike race will be held Sunday, August 30 at Camden Snow Bowl. The kids race starts at 9:15 a.m. Other races of 8, 12 and 16 miles start at 10 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the MidCoast Chapter of New England Mountain Bike Association.
Kids race free, and other races cost $26 at pre-registration and $31 at day-of-race registration, plus the price of an EFTA license which can be purchased at the event for $4. The Maine Sport RunOff is Maine’s oldest cross-country mountain bike race. The course is 95 percent single-track and features a technical single-track climb interspersed with “breather” sections. At the top of the race course is a stunning view of the ocean. The white-knuckle descent is designed to test the rider’s downhill skills, with flow and less breaking. There is a separate kids’ race held on less challenging terrain, designed to keep the 12-and-under crowd entertained. L/A Senior Hockey registering for winter
AUBURN – The L/A Senior Adult Hockey League will host registration for its 15th season Sunday, August 30  and Sunday, Sept. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pond House near Ingersoll Arena in Auburn.
Big news:  The L/A Senior Hockey League is also starting a new women’s  beginner division this year as well as the more advanced level that started last season.. Registration will be held the same night, same time.
Registration fee will remain at $355 per player and is due at time of registration. The registration is for all returning players as well as new players wanting to enter the league. All new players will have their names placed on the draft list. The player draft will be held on a later date. The amount of new players entering the league will be based on the amount of openings.
The season is scheduled to start the weekend of October 3-4.  Games will be mostly played on Friday and Sunday nights and will end mid-March.  The season will consist of 24 games, including playoffs

Lewiston Rec Volleyball organizational meeting
LEWISTON – The City of Lewiston Department of Recreation Volleyball Leagues will have their organizational meeting Tuesday, Sept. 1 at the Multi-Purpose Center Cafeteria.  Anyone interested in organizing a team or playing on a team should attend.  The Co-Ed B-1 and B-2 Leagues will meet at 6 p.m. to go over rules, dates and procedures.
