JAY — Police Chief Larry White Sr. has announced that the Jay Police Department will crack down on drunk drivers during September.

Police, as part of the national crack-down campaign, “Drunk Driving Over the Limit. Under Arrest and Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving,” will be out in full force during September to arrest those operating under the influence.

Impaired driving is one of America’s most often committed and deadliest crimes. Locally it is no different, White said. Approximately 23 percent of the motor vehicle accidents covered in 2008 by the Jay Police Department were caused by an impaired operator.

Federal funds from a grant will be used to help the Jay Police Department hold high visibility enforcement activities. Sgt. Troy Young will supervise the program. The funds will support the extra man power and cover the overtime cost of the officers to provide extra patrols.

Those caught driving while impaired will be arrested and prosecuted.
