PARIS — A small fire that broke out in the loading dock of the NEPW Logistics New England Warehouse on Pine Street on Wednesday afternoon was quickly doused by firefighters.
Firefighters at the scene said a welder’s torch apparently set off several bales of paper in a loading dock in the back of the building.
Fire crews from Paris, Norway and Oxford were called out, but the fire was put out before most were needed at the scene.
The 233,000-square-foot building, formerly known as the New England Public Warehouse, was the scene of a massive fire last December when a spark, believed to be from a welder’s torch, touched off a high pile of shredded paper in the north end of the building, sending 15 workers scrambling for their lives.
No one one was hurt but 44 municipalities from central and southern Maine sent some 150 firefighters and equipment including two 100-foot bucket trucks to quell the roaring fire that was fueled by 20,000 tons of paper pulp from Canada on its way to Maine mills.
A 259- by 70-foot section of the roof from the building’s center to the rear collapsed during the five days it took to extinguish the fire.
