LEWISTON — Teens are invited to “Make Waves” at the Lewiston Public Library this summer by participating in the library’s first teen summer reading program from June 14 to July 24. Teens ages 13 through high school are invited to sign up at the library and read for prizes, as well as take part in special youth events offered throughout the summer.

Everyone who signs up will receive a small incentive prize and will be encouraged to keep a reading log and update it at least once each week. Youth are also encouraged to attend summer activities at the library, including regular art programs, monthly movie screenings, book discussions and anime club meetings.

Attending programs will give teen readers bonus points towards weekly medium-size prizes or big prizes, such as a fifth-generation iPod Nano and a Waveboard. At the end of the program, the person who reads the most will win the grand prize iPod Touch.

Prize points are awarded based on minutes spent reading, rather than pages or number of books, said Molly Ladd, the library’s teen services volunteer.

“We’re also encouraging the teens to try reading something new, whether it is a newspaper, magazine, text book for summer school or a traditional novel. Since prizes are awarded based on time spent reading, no one will be penalized for choosing a nontraditional summer reading material,” she said.

To sign up, interested teens may stop by the Reference Desk or contact Ladd for more information at 513-3135, ext. 3521 or [email protected].
