MEXICO — Selectmen on Wednesday night ordered surveillance cameras to be installed at the recreation park to prevent more vandalism.

The action follows two incidents that caused thousands of dollars of damage to the fields, storage garage, dugouts and a truck used by the Recreation Department.

Two young men have been arrested in connection with damages caused 10 days ago. No one has been charged for the first vandalism spree.

Three security cameras will be installed at sites determined by the Mexico Police Department, and several signs will be posted indicating that cameras will be in use at the park.

The Board of Selectmen and Recreation Committee will research the costs and options available for a more extensive surveillance system.

“You’re not going to be able to stop everyone from getting in there,” police Chief Jim Theriault said. “If the cameras don’t work out, there are other places they can be used. It won’t be a waste of money to buy them.”

The board had previously directed the recreation department to close the entrance gates each night to help prevent people from entering during off hours. But an all-terrain vehicle trail also leads into the park that is difficult to block.

Recreation Committee member Tammy Burgess will bring her research to the board next month.

The three cameras will paid for with some of the insurance money the town received because of the damage done to the recreation department truck.

Also on Wednesday, the board re-elected Barbara Laramee as chairwoman and Richie Philbrick vice chairman. They welcomed newly elected selectman, Byron Ouellette,  and re-elected selectman, Reggie Arsenault.

They also welcomed new police officer Dan Carrier who recently completed training at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Four of the five-person police department have now completed police academy training, Theriault said.

The monthly meeting dates were changed to the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. However, because of a change in the summer schedule, the board tentatively set just two meetings, July 6 and Aug, 10.

In other matters, the board unanimously renewed a liquor license for Tommy Guns bar and restaurant on the Roxbury Road for one year, and granted an amusement permit for karaoke and disc jockey music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at the establishment.
