WATERFORD — Elaine Emery, superintendent of the Exhibition Hall at the Waterford World’s Fair, is seeking quilters to make a Maine blueberry quilt square for this year’s quilt contest.
The square needs to be completed and returned to Emery by Friday, July 9, so that it can be judged on Saturday, July 10, and prepared to be on display at the fair. For an entry form and more information, contact Emery at 674-2694 or e-mail [email protected].
Last year’s Christmas sampler squares have been assembled into a quilt which will be on display at the fair and raffle tickets will be sold to help raise money for the contest. The winner will be drawn at the end of the fair and the winner need not be present. There were a total of 18 squares made last year.
Emery is also asking bakers to enter in the different cooking contests, such as whoopie pies, chocolate chip cookies, apple and blueberry pies or the “chocolate whatever” contest.
Specialty contests this year will include a homemade apron contest, either hand-sewn or by machine, with a pattern of the sewer’s choice and the materials of whatever is around the house. There will be two age categories: adults and children under 14.
The picnic basket contest will also return this year. Participants in the contest should pick a theme and include a 5 by 7 card listing what the picnic is celebrating and the food that would be included. And of course, a some kind of picnic basket should be included.
For the scrapbook page contest, participants may enter a 12-inch by 12-inch page from a scrapbook, covered with a page protector or plastic wrap. The topic may include vacation, fair days, animals, birthdays, anniversary or wedding and a total of three pages may be entered.
The hobby exhibit and collector’s corner will include small hobbies or a part of a collection that has been going on for at least 2 years. Exhibitors should have a 5 by 7 card labeling the hobby or collection with the name and address and age of exhibitor. There will be three age groups: 5 to 10 years, 11 to 15 years and 16 years and over.
Prizes will be awarded to the first three places in each contest and all monies will be paid after the fair when participants pick up their articles.
