LEWISTON — Hanan Ahmed of Lewiston was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from The Caleb Foundation, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization.
The foundation manages and develops affordable housing to residents throughout New England. The Caleb Group, an affiliate of The Caleb Foundation, provides supportive services to nearly 4,000 residents throughout New England. Ahmed received the scholarship during their first fundraising event, “Preserving History, Providing Homes with Opportunities,” held in Salem, Mass.
Caleb’s scholarship program, established in 2003, awards educational grants up to $1,000 to be used in an educational program of the resident’s choice to achieve personal career goals.
Ahmed is a graduate of Lewiston High School and a resident of River Valley Village, formerly known as Tall Pines. She played lacrosse, field hockey and basketball; was initiated into the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society; and sat on the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council.
Outside of school, Ahmed participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and was a student School Representative for the Lewiston school board. She also held a part-time job at the Lewiston Public Library while going to school.
Ahmed has been accepted to Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., for a five-year master’s program in biomedical engineering. Her decision to pursue biomedical engineering stemmed from her experiences attending an engineering summer program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She said in her essay to the scholarship committee, “I have always had a deep fondness for the medical field. I want to be an engineer because I believe that engineering is one of the fundamental ways to make a difference in the world.”
All scholarship donations go directly to assist in paying for the rising cost of education. Anyone interested in making a donation to assist a prospective college student in the community, may send donations to The Caleb Foundation, 491 Humphrey St., Swampscott, MA 01907.
