100 years ago, 1910

The installation of officers of the Cercle Canadiaen took place last evening. The St. Louis band furnished music and speeches were made by a number. Refreshments were served. Florin Marquis reported that the past year had been successful, a balance of $100 being in the treasury where a year ago the Cercle was in debt. There are now 135 members. It is planned to increase the membership and engage larger quarters.

50 years ago, 1960

Lewiston Patrolman Laurent E. Veilleux has been named manager of the LPD’s softball team, which he said yesterday was shaping up fast and should have an unbeaten season in official competition.

The LPD sluggers will play two games each with the Portland and Bangor police departments. The first game, against Portland, is scheduled for July 13 at the Bates Mfg. Co. field in Lewiston. The LPD squad has already engaged in a couple of practice contests with teams in the local softball league.

25 years ago 1985

Lewiston and Auburn’s police department dispatchers might have had more on their minds Friday afternoon than New England Telephone Co.’s “reach out and touch someone” jingle, when seven local emergency sirens went off accidentally.

As a result, emergency telephone lines buzzed with hundreds of curious or worried people, calling police and fire officials to see why the alarm was sounding.

The attention-getting, howling horns simulated a local civil emergency from about 5 to 5:30 p.m.

The director of the Androscoggin County Bureau of Civil Emergency Preparedness explained that a telephone line malfunction caused the problem, the third false alarm in a month.
