BAR HARBOR — The 91st Maine Amateur golf championship, the crown jewel of the Maine State Golf Association’s summer schedule, visits Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor this year.
The traditional three-day event runs Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, and we’ll do our best to keep you updated as it moves along. Check back here all week for the latest from the course.
Seaking of the course, Kebo Valley is a older style, classic design. Small, pushed up greens are hard targets, we’re close enough to the ocean where the grass and wind are just a bit different than most golfers are used to, and the layout, while compact, can play long, even though it’s only 6,200 yards.
7:10 p.m. – After a major conversation and rules question on 18 in the final group, the three golfers have all finally putted out. No one came close to the lead, and it is safe — until tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for following along. We’ll be back Wednesday morning.
6:48 p.m. – And we are down to one, as the second-to-last group taps in at 18. Bob Langlois of Fox Ridge is in the final group.
6:44 p.m. – Two to go. Brad Pattershall of Springbrook in with an 81. The penultimate group is on the 18th green, and the final group had hit its tee shots on 18.
6:30 p.m. – The lead appears safe, with still just nine golfers remaining to finish their rounds. Two area golfers —Brad Pattershall of Springbrook and Bob Langlois of Fox Ridge — among them.
5:35 p.m. – Nine more groups to come in, and not many reports coming in of a low round. Looks like the top three are pretty safe. Latest local scores include Andrew Slattery at 74.
4:47 p.m. – The ominous skies have passed with little but a passing sprinkle or two…big ol’ wipe of the brow here from the staff. Less than a third of the field remains.
4:22 p.m. – Ted Stratman of Fox Ridge is in at 77, and one of the surprises of the first round, golf writer from the Press Herald, Tom Chard, now tied for fourth with a 71 after a 32 on the back nine.
4:14 p.m. – Jace Pearson in at 72, a part of the local contingent. Scott Stone led that good grouping with a 71, and Keith Patterson also carded a 72. Best collective group score of the day to this point.
4:06 p.m. – Joe Manganaro, now playing out of Martindale, comes in at 75, and Johnny Hayes IV of Purpoodock slides into third with an even-par round of 70.
3:54 p.m. – Underwhelming rounds from some of the top golfers in the second wave. A 71 (Jones) is no slouch of a round, but he’ll start the day tomorrow four shots back of the lead. Other top golfers to come in include Siewertsen (79) and Joe Baker (79).
3:26 p.m. – Jones on the 18th green. Their round will have lasted 4 hours and 55 minu
3:17 p.m. – We’re still about a half hour away from some really interesting scores to come in, including two-time champion Ricky Jones, perennial contender Marc Siewertsen, Norway CC’s Joe Baker and, even a bit later, former champ — at Kebo, even — Eric Crouse.
2:21 p.m. – An update on Jordan’s round: No three-putts, which on this course is like money in the bank. Missed a couple of 10- to 15-footers on the last couple of holes when he was in hurry mode.
2:09 p.m. – Curtis Jordan is in with a 72, and has been told he is very lucky not to have been issued a two-stroke penalty for slow play. He, Victor Linkovich and Weldon Leonard took more than four-and-a-half hours to play their round. Still, in at 72 puts Jordan in the picture for a top-10 finish.
1:48 p.m. – And the slow play demons have reared their ugly heads. The 9:20 group, that includes area golfer Curtis Jordan, has just arrived on the 18th fairway. They are almost two holes behind the group that finished ahead of them. We’re about nine groups away from seeing some more of the top golfers come through, including Ricky Jones, Eric Crouse, Marc Siewertsen and the venerable Ron Brown Jr, who is playing in his 36th consecutive Maine Amateur.
1:15 p.m. – One more area finisher, Craig Chapman out of Fox Ridge, comes in at 76. He’s in that big ol’ pack that will be fighting to make the cut tomorrow.
1:06 p.m. – A few more groups in, including a few golfers local to the Sun Journal area: Brian Bilodeau out of Martindale in with a nifty 71, and Seth Fournier out of Oakdale has carded an 81.
12:45 p.m. – Not much else in the way of low scores right now. That temperature out there is going to make afternoon golfers suffer. In a great turnaround, Matt Zito followed a 42 on the front with a 31 on the back to post a 73. His inward 31 is the best inward score so far (it amounts to 5-under on that side).
11:57 a.m. – The last golfers to finish in the morning are in, and more red numbers. This time, from Madison High School product Seth Sweet, who carded a 68. The scores are out there if you play the holes right.
11:48 a.m. – Jason Gall out of Augusta Country Club is now the man to beat, and he may well be the leader after the first day. As quickly as these greens are playing and as warm as it’s getting, Gall’s 3-under 67 has him in a great position. He had five birdies and two bogeys on the round.
11:33 a.m. – Gay has company. Scott Barnicle in at 72 also, and his round featured a funky ruling that gave him a birdie where he thought he’d made par.
11:23 a.m. – Ryan Gay is the leader in the clubhouse with a 2-over 72 to begin his week. According to Gay, he missed four 3-footers, and he 3-putted all three par-3s on the front nine. More coming in, stay tuned.
11:10 a.m. – The first group of the day is on 18, and Ryan Gay’s length may have cost him a stroke. His drive, long as always, landed him in a bunker on the left side of the fairway, well past where the others in his group had hit. He had an awkward lie, and he managed to get the ball out of the trap, but into the rough left of the green.
10:44 a.m. – Another quick note: The last time the amateur was at Kebo Valley, in 1998, Eric Crouse won the title. He’s in the field this week.
10:30 a.m. – As the first group of the morning, which features Ryan Gay, Henry Fall and Scott Sirois, reaches the 16th hole, we have some news on the sadder side: Mark Plummer, 13-time champion and a perennial contender, had to withdraw due to a pinched nerve and a bleeding ulcer, the latter discovered after he passed out on the golf course while playing recenty. He’s replaced by an area alternate qualifier and that group, which also features Ricky Jones, has just teed off.
