FARMINGTON — An 89-year-old woman was injured Friday when the bicycle she was riding was struck by a vehicle at Perham and High streets.
Sara Goodman, 89, originally from New York but now living on Perham Street, was biking through the intersection from Broadway to Perham. She was within the crosswalk just before 1 p.m. when Koren Velez, 58, of Farmington was making a right turn from Broadway onto High Street and struck the bicycle, Farmington Police officer Michael Adcock said.
According to a witness, Beverly Misner, the bicyclist lay unconscious in the road as she and others called for help. Misner said she tooted her horn at Velez who continued driving up High Street about 50 feet and turned into the parking area behind the water company.
Velez apparently tried to get out of traffic by moving into the parking lot, Adcock said. Her 2001 Ford Escort had damage to the front, he added.
When Adcock and other emergency personnel arrived, Goodman was conscious but disoriented, he said. She received a cut to her head, lost some blood and complained of soreness in her hip.
Adcock said she was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar ambulance with nonlife threatening injuries. Later Friday afternoon, he said she was undergoing testing at the hospital.
Adcock charged Velez with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
