After Maineiacs’ GM Roger Shannon let the cat out of the bag Saturday night about an impending trade, a post this morning on an Atlantic Canada Internet chat board has put a potential name with the circumstance.

The Maineiacs appear to have acquired Cole Hawes, a 17-year-old depth-type forward, from Shawinigan, for a third-round selection in 2011 and a fifth-rounder in 2012.

Hawes played minimally in the league last season as a 16-year-old skater, logging just seven games: Two early in the season while veterans were away at NHL camps, three during a Shawinigan swing through the maritime provinces, and two near the end of the season. In those seven games, Hawes had no points, two penalty minutes and was a minus-3.

But he also won 10 of 20 faceoffs, and could add that element to a fourth line as a spare piece to the puzzle.

That, IMO, leaves the roster looking comething like this:

* – This assumes, of course, that Anthoine decides to remain with the team.

** – This is a stretch, honestly, but at a young 17, he is worth the look as a project pick, if only to keep other teams honest. he can work on his skating, and honestly, he’d be here to play four shifts a game, for a total of about 2:30 of icetime.

*** – Kennedy may stay around longer for two reasons: 1, He’s earned it (He looks much better this year than he did last year). 2, He needs to play, and the team needs to find him a situation where he can play and learn and get better. If they haven’t been able to do that yet, sticking around here isn’t going to hurt. Beats staying home and doing nothing.

I haven’t seen Wood play yet, but IMO, it was between him and Kourkoulis for the last defensive spot on this team, and with Kourkoulis leaving with a medical issue, if Wood lives up to his billing as a top-end draft pick, he could stick.
