Former Bates College baseball coach Edwin Thompson has accepted an assistant coaching position at Duke University, multiple sources have confirmed to the Sun Journal.

Thompson resigned Wednesday after a successful two-year run at Bates, indicating that he was accepting a job elsewhere. He would not divulge the school or the coaching position.

A former college and professional baseball player and high school coach, Thompson, a 1998 graduate of Jay High School, becomes the second coach in the Duke athletic department with strong Maine connections.

Duke women’s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie, a native of Brunswick, formerly held that same position at the University of Maine and Michigan State.
