Pierre-Olivier Morin had nothing to lose.
The Lewiston Maineiacs’ 19-year-old forward, the top returning point-getter from a year ago, received an invitation this summer to join the Vancouver Canucks in preseason rookie camp. With no formal expectations that would follow a drafted player, and with nothing holding him back, Morin jumped at the chance.
Now, after three games and about to play in his fourth rookie contest of the week, Morin feels like he’s fitting right in.
“I get to play again tonight, and I am playing on the top line,” Morin said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. “(Sunday) I played on the fourth line, the game after I was on the second.”
Monday, getting a few more minutes than he did Sunday, Morin flashed his speed. He scored a goal in a 5-3 Vancouver win over the San Jose Sharks rookies, beating a pair of defenders up the right side and then the goalie with a snipe of a wrister.
“I had the chance alone on the goalie in the third period in that game,” Morin said. “I saw the opening blocker side, and I got the shot there.”
In Wednesday night’s contest, Morin will skate on the Canucks’ top line with Alex Friesen and Bill Sweatt.
“This, I think, is my last chance to impress the team today, because I think everyone has to sit out at least one game, and I have played in all of them,” Morin said. “It was a bit more difficult, I think, at first, because I was invited, I have to prove myself more, but the guys in the organization and the players have really helped me.”
Morin said Thursday is the day of reckoning for most of the rookies. He said he believes the team plans to divide the squad into three groups. Groups A and B will be full of players expected to fill the rosters at the NHL and AHL levels, he said, while Group C will have players who are younger, who are likely to return to their respective junior or college squads. The latter, he said, would involve practice time with the big squad in the team’s main preseason camp before being sent back home.
“I hope I can be in that group, that would be amazing,” Morin said. “I might have a chance to make that, I hope. I would be really happy to make it that far.”
