FARMINGTON — Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services (SAVES) will host two support groups this fall, both facilitated by Aimee Cecile, MSW, a longtime SAVES supporter.
The two support groups, Managing Traumatic Stress Through Art and Writing for Recovery, are based on Judith Herman’s work, “Trauma and Recovery” and Maxine Harris’ “Trauma, Recovery and Empowerment.”
The meetings will be held every Tuesday from Sept. 28 through Dec. 14, at the Holman House, 227 Main St.
Managing Traumatic Stress through Art will meet from 12 to 1:30 p.m. and will focus on providing space for an individual to explore their experiences and healing through various mediums such as drawing, painting, collage and others. No previous art practice or expertise is necessary.
Writing for Recovery will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will use Julia Cameron’s text, “The Artist’s Way,” to open up creativity and make peace with one’s self. In the group, listening, writing and talking will be used to explore one’s healing and recovery from trauma. No previous writing practice is necessary.
“These groups are one of the most important services we offer,” said Judy Rawlings, SAVES executive director. “The safe space that can be created within a support group can allow room for tremendous growth, healing and processing.”
For further information or to sign up for the support groups, call the SAVES office at 778-9522, send an e-mail to [email protected] or come by the office.
For nearly 30 years, SAVES has helped people in Franklin County recover from the trauma of sexual violence. Through educational programs designed to reshape common attitudes and beliefs that make sexual violence common, SAVES works to prevent all forms of sexual violence.
