PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s largest city has a new concrete skatepark.

Members of Portland’s Skatepark Planning Committee held a groundbreaking Wednesday for the new park at the Dougherty Field recreation complex.

The Portland Press Herald reports it took the city more than three years to find the right location and raise $250,000 needed to build it.

In 2006, the city tore down its wooden skatepark, the Forum on Marginal Way, to make way for development.

Bikers and skateboarders had few options other than using city streets and sidewalks or driving to skateparks as far away as Bath, Bethel and Rye, N.H.
