MEXICO — The Friends and Family Forever Relay for Life Team will sponsor an event-filled Family Fun Day Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Mexico Rec Park on Roxbury Road. The rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 26.
Organizers Kim Chiasson and Gloria Carrier promise a fun-filled day for the whole family, including the family dog, which can be entered in the Festival Dog Show. There will be two categories for puppies up to age 2 and for dogs older than 2. Trophies will be awarded in each category for best of show. All dogs should be leashed at the park.
A Maine State Game Warden will also give demonstrations with his search and rescue dog. Horse back rides will be offered.
The Community Emergency Response Team will be there with their mobile communications center to demonstrate how ham radio communications allows them to be in touch with contacts around the state, the country and even the world.
One of the more taste tantalizing events at the festival will be the Oxford County Best Whoopie Pie Contest. There will be two categories in the contest: Best Original Chocolate and Best New Flavor.
There will be eight judges, including Wayne Gallant, Oxford County sheriff and self-proclaimed as one of Western Maine’s number one whoopie pie aficionados. Those wanting to enter their whoopie pies in the contest will need to bring 14 whoopie pies: two for the judging and 12 to sell.
Kids of all ages can try out the four-wheel pedal karts that will be available for them to buzz around the “Pedal Kart Area.” There will be a junior size to fit the younger 4- to 8-year-olds and full size for the older kids.
At noon there will be free live entertainment from one of western Maine’s bands plus a pork barbecue for an extra charge of $7. The barbecue will include pork loin, homemade baked beans with a fresh biscuit and a drink.
In addition to the above the festival will also feature a Mexico Fire Department ladder truck and Sparky, apple cider making, a Chinese auction and face painting.
The cost for the entire day is $5 each person, which includes all of the above mentioned events (except the barbecue) and activities, plus free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks.
The Mexico Jr. Explorers will volunteer their time to help out with the day’s activities.
