GRAY — Jack Martell converted a penalty kick early in the second half to snap a scoreless tie, and his brother, Ian, added a needed insurance marker late on an assist from Tyler Holmquist to lift Gray-New Gloucester to a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Cape Elizabeth in Western Maine Conference boys’ soccer action Thursday.
After Ian Martell’s goal put the Patriots (6-4-0) on top by two with 2:40 to play in regulation, Tim Takach pulled the Capers (7-1-1) within a goal with less than a minute to play.
Gray-New Gloucester keeper Ryan Cavallaro stopped seven Cape shots to record the win. Nick Breed, his counterpart on the other end of the field, turned aside six in the loss.
Morse 5, EL 1
BATH — Morse erupted with four goals in the second half as the Shipbuilders dismantled Edward Little, 5-1, in a boys’ soccer game Thursday.
Morse (5-3) was holding a 1-0 lead when Eric Trautman-Mosher punched in three goals. Pat Hobson and Magnus Lilleaas each scored a goal.
For the Red Eddies (3-5), Tim Mains scored in the second half on a Nate Blais feed to spoil the Shipbuilders’ would-be shutout.
Girls’ soccer
Gray-NG 2, Cape Elizabeth 2
CAPE ELIZABETH — Gray-New Gloucester overcame an early deficit with goals from Taylor Darnell and Julia Martell, only to knock the ball into its own cage with less than six minutes to play as the Patriots settled for a 2-2 draw with Cape Elizabeth in WMC girls’ soccer action Thursday.
Karyn Barrett Turn opened the scoring for the Capers early in the first. Darnell’s ninth of the season evened the game up a short time later, and Martell’s strike with 10 minutes to play in the game put the visitors on top. But Michaela Despins had the ball ricochet into her own cage off her head five minutes later to knot the score.
Gray-NG keeper Sammie Wilkins was solid, stopping 14 shots to preserve the tie. Cape keeper Alexandra Weatherbie finished with nine saves.
Field hockey
Leavitt 1, Belfast 1
BELFAST — Adrie Newton converted a feed from Holland Gallup with 18:26 to play in regulation and Taylor Eels was solid in net through the rest of the half and through overtime as Leavitt battled to a 1-1 tie with Belfast in KVAC field hockey action Thursday.
Ashland Hall gave the Lions (6-2-2) a 1-0 advantage less than five minutes into the game on a pass from Madison Cummings, but the Hornets (7-1-1) held Belfast at bay the rest of the way, despite the home squad holding a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, and a 18-9 advantage in shots.
Eels finished with 10 saves for Leavitt. Paxton Mohney stopped five for the Lions.
Messalonskee 3, Oxford Hills 0
OAKLAND — Ally Delisle scored two goals and Bri Warren added one as Messalonskee dismissed Oxford Hills (5-5) with a 3-0 victory in a field hockey game Thursday.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first half before they added two more goals in the second half. Messalonskee outshot Oxford Hills, 13-2, and held a lopsided advantage in corners, 20-1.
Vikings goalie Rachel Brennan had a busy afternoon, making 17 saves.
