PORTLAND — Portland Ovations will present the Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet at Merrill Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 4.
For more than three decades, the quartet has explored and expanded the range and context of the string quartet. Its breadth and creativity have led to collaborations with many of the world’s foremost composers and eclectic performers.
The Kronos Quartet’s repertoire encompasses works by 20th-century masters such as Bartok and Shostakovich; contemporary composers like Terry Riley and Franghiz Ali-Zadeh; jazz legends Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk; and artists from even farther afield like Jimi Hendrix and Asha Bhosle.
The quartet’s work has earned numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2004, and the “Musicians of the Year” distinction in 2003 from Musical America.
The program for the Nov. 4 concert, “Music Without Boarders,” will feature music from Ethiopia, India and Palestine as well as other culturally rich corners of the globe.
Ovations Offstage will present a free lecture, “Kronos Quartet: Thirty Years on the Cutting Edge,” from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Green Room. It will be given by Dr. Rob Lehmann, director of the strings program at University of Southern Maine’s school of music.
Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert range from $36 to $42. For tickets, call 842-0800; visit PortTix, the Merrill Auditorium box office at 20 Myrtle St.; or log on to www.portlandovations.org.
