The first snow of the season came Thursday morning at about 9:15 o’clock. It snowed heavily for about an hour and then turned to rain. A short squall with hail made a coating that stayed on the ground all day. The wind was strong and the chilly blasts were a reminder of what is coming later. While the snowstorm was heavy at Lewiston, there was none at Lisbon Falls.
50 years ago, 1960
Three girls who skipped school and stayed away from home overnight were picked up yesterday by Lewiston Police Officers Kenneth F. Woods and Frank Kelley.
After being questioned by Officer Woods and Truant Officer Leo McGraw, the girls’ cases were referred to the department’s juvenile officer. The girls, ages 13 and 14, probably will be brought before a juvenile court session.
25 years ago, 1985
The state’s six-day annual moose hunt ended with the second biggest total kill in recent history, according to preliminary tallies, but officials said Sunday they might still be counting.
“We’re within three of our previous record,” said Paul Fournier, a state fish and game spokesman. “There’ll probably be a few stragglers coming in.”
As of noon Sunday, with all stations reporting, the week’s kill stood at 880, just three fewer than the high record in 1982
