SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police say a motorist who crashed into a police cruiser on Maine’s Casco Bay Bridge was talking on a cell phone and didn’t see the cruiser or its flashing lights.

As a result, traffic flowing from South Portland to Portland was cut off for four hours Monday.

Police say the South Portland cruiser — with blue lights flashing — was parked behind a disabled vehicle in the passing lane when it was hit from behind by a pickup truck.

Chief Ed Googins tells the Portland Press Herald that the investigation points toward driver inattention. He says the pickup driver was talking on a cell phone when the crash happened.

Officer Rocco Navarro was treated and released from a hospital.

No one else was injured.
