GREENE — Androscoggin Junior Grange members, friends and families have an ongoing project of collecting can tabs and donating them to the Shriners.

Drop off containers are located at Landry’s Quik Stop, A&A Hardware and Bebe’s Redemption in Greene. In Turner, Schrepp’s Redemption saves them and they are also saved at 707 Main Street Redemption in Lewiston.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield and Boston have been collecting the pull-tabs from all types of cans for more than 16 years, recycling them and putting the money toward programs that directly benefit children. Since it started, about half a million pounds of aluminum tabs have been collected and recycled.

Last year, 98 pounds were collected through the Grange project and this year, 166 pounds were collected.
