BOOTHBAY — On Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m., the Boothbay Railway Village will host its first in a series of speaker programs for this season. Admission is free to all for this discussion entitled “Stanley Steamers – A Maine Invention – A Boothbay Relevancy And More.”

The Stanley twins, Francis E. and Freelan O. of Kingfield, Maine, were inventors, violin makers and makers of the famous Stanley steam car. They were also frequent visitors to Lincoln County and the Boothbay area. Learn more about their fascinating story and their relationship to Squirrel Island, the Lincoln County Court House and many other little known facts.

The first Stanley steam car was built in 1896 and continued until 1924, and from 1895-1905 they actually out-produced gasoline powered vehicles. In 1906 a Stanley steam-powered car set the land speed record at 127 mile per hour, incredible for the time.

Meet Sue Davis, founder of the Stanley Museum in Kingfield, and hear the tale of the Stanley Brothers. Davis has been involved in several historical efforts in Maine and elsewhere since 1981. She not only is conversant in the history of the Stanley steam car but also teaches a drivers education course on the operation and firing of such a car.

The Boothbay Railway Village is located on Route 27 in Boothbay. For more information, contact 633-4727 or visit www.railwayvillage.org.
