YARMOUTH, Maine (AP) — An auction of keepsakes made from the remains of New England’s champion elm tree, nicknamed Herbie, brought in nearly $30,000.
The town of Yarmouth divided Herbie’s 15-ton trunk among artisans who gave him new life in dozens of items that were put to bid Saturday.
Yarmouth Community Services Director Marcia Noyes said Monday that about $28,000 was raised. She says she expects $15,000 of that to go to the town tree trust. The keepsakes include high-end furniture, bowls, a clock, baseball bats and an electric guitar that sold for $4,500.
The tree lived to the ripe old age of 217, thanks to the care of tree warden Frank Knight. Knight, who’s 102, attended the auction.
