LIVERMORE FALLS — Old tires and rims, bottles and soccer balls were just a few of the items found along the Foundry Road Trail Friday as a Livermore Falls High School health class started a cleanup.
It is part of their environmental health unit, a study of land and air pollution, said health educator Darren Carter. He and Margaret Leclerc brought about 15 student volunteers to the trail site near the Recreation Field on Friday morning. Two other classes were expected to help Friday and a couple on Monday, about 110 students in all, he said.
Along with picking up trash, if time allowed, they wanted to spruce up the skate park, Carter said.
Working with the Androscoggin Land Trust, Carter initiated the Foundry Road cleanup along the site of the proposed Riverfront School Trail that connects Livermore Falls schools to Jay schools.
The Foundry Road leads down to the town’s recreation fields where the high school soccer team plays, student Austin Schmidt said as he picked up trash among the thorns on the banking behind the Depot Street elderly housing.
Stretching to pull an empty water bottle from the ditch, Caitlin Beairsto said the students had turned it into a competition.
Trash bags and gloves were provided by the school and Carter planned to go back and pick up the bags, tires and other trash that was picked up.
