VASSALBORO — The identity of a body found in the woods earlier this week was that of a man who is a convicted child molester who failed to report to jail earlier this year, according to State Police.

Earlier this week deer hunters found the badly decomposed body of a man and a shotgun in the woods of Route 32, according to a press release. The State Medical Examiner’s Office says DNA tests identified the man as 60-year-old William Stein, of Vassalboro. The cause of death is still pending, but foul play is not suspected, according to a press release.

Stein was scheduled to begin serving a 3 1/2 year prison term at Kennebec County Jail on June 11. Earlier that month Stein plead guilty to gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact with a young child.

According to the press release, Stein had been living at the China Lake Mobile Home Park in Vassalboro, a short distance from where the body was found.
