ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bates College senior Brian Ellis scored 23 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the Bobcats to a season-opening 74-60 non-conference win over Babson College on Friday afternoon at the University of Rochester’s Chuck Resler Invitational.

Ellis, the All-NESCAC forward who entered the game with 985 career points, became the 30th player in Bates men’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. His jumper with 17:03 to play in the second half represented the 999th and 1,000th points of his career, and gave Bates a 44-34 lead. Ellis went on to pass Tom Goodwin at 1,005 and now is at 29th place on the list, with 1,008. The last player to join the 1,000-point club was Bryan Wholey in January 2008, Ellis’s rookie season.

Bates faces St. Lawrence tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Rochester’s Palestra.

Amherst 90, UMF 89, OT

AMHERST, Mass. — Conor Meehan scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Amherst College men’s basketball team to a 90-89 overtime win against the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday in the Ken Wright Memorial Invitational. Jeff Holmes broke an 89-89 tie on a free throw with 0.4 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The Beavers (0-1) led the Lord Jeffs (1-0) for the majority of the game, but Amherst took a 66-64 lead with 7:31 remaining in the second half thanks to a pair of free throws from Aaron Toomey, who finished with 21 points in his collegiate debut. The hosts remained on top until Nate Carson tied things up at 81-81 with 15 seconds on the clock, and the game went into extra time when Toomey missed a three-pointer as time ran out.

Maine 95, UMM 44

ORONO — The University of Maine men’s basketball team dominated from the opening tip en route to a 95-44 victory over UMaine-Machias on Friday evening at the Alfond Arena.

Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Murphy Burnatowski, who had 17 points including four dunks.

Burnatowski scored the first five points on a three-pointer followed by a two-handed dunk with a nice assist from Raheem Singleton.

Sean McNally followed with a layup and Singleton would add another as Maine took a 9-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.

 The Clippers would get on the board, but Maine followed that up with a 15-to-2 run courtesy of five more points from Burnatowski, including another dunk as the Black Bears opened the game up to take a 24-5 lead eight minutes into the game.

 Maine would cruise the rest of the half to take a 56-24 lead into halftime.

 Burnatowski scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first stanza to give Maine a big cushion. Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) added 13 on 4-of-8 shooting while Singleton pitched in with five assists and three steals.

 Maine shot an impressive 73.3 percent from the field in the first half while limiting the Clippers to 42.1 percent shooting.

Women’s basketball

USM 88, UMF 51

GORHAM — Freshman guard Lauren Rousseau and junior forward Courtney Cochran scored 13 and 11 points respectively to lead a balanced attack as the University of Southern Maine defeated the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers 88-51 in the second game of the 2010 USM Tip Off Classic on Friday night at Hill Gymnasium.

With the win, the Huskies even out their record at 1-1. Playing in their season opener, the Beavers fall to 0-1. Salve Regina defeated Husson University 67-57 in the first game.

Men’s hockey

Boston College 4, Maine 0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The No. 3 University of Maine men’s ice hockey team suffered its second loss of the season when it fell to Boston College 4-0 on Friday night at Conte Forum. Maine falls to 6-2-3 on the season and 4-1-1 in Hockey East play. Boston College improves to 7-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in league play.

The Eagles got on the board first with a 5-on-3 goal at 14:46 of the first period, giving BC a lead it would no relinquish. Paul Carey beat Maine goalie Dan Sullivan with a shot just outside the crease.

Maine finished the game with a 32-24 edge in shots on goal, including a 15-7 advantage in the third period. The Black Bears were 0-for-7 on the power play, while BC was 2-for-4.

 Boston College and Maine will finish their two-game Hockey East series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Conte Forum.
