100 years ago,1910

The blue clay which the Maine Central is digging in Lewiston and carrying to Auburn to fill in the dump for the new yard has been found to be of unusually fine quality for modelling, and E.L.H.S. students and members of the upper grades of the Auburn Grammar schools have been doing some excellent work with it.

50 years ago, 1960

The former Strand Theater building, one of Lewiston’s oldest and best-known landmarks, apparently will be torn down and the area utilized for off-street parking.

Tentative plans to demolish the large structure, situated at 224 Main St., were revealed to a newsman yesterday by an official of B. Peck Realty Co., owner of the property.

The building was erected in 1914 for theater purposes and was once known as the Lewiston Theater Building. The theater building replaced a bowling alley destroyed by fire.

25 years ago, 1985

A Lewiston police officer has been named valedictorian of the cadet class graduating Friday from Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Waterville.

David B. Chamberlain averaged 98.61 academically over the 12-week training session, making him the top cadet out of 40, according to Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscom.
