When “The Chocolate Soldier” opens here at the Empire on Dec. 5, he will have come direct from the Casino Theatre in New York and the Majestic in Boston, with more medals for records strung across his manly chest than a German sharp-shooter at a Schuetzenfest. All of these records, by the way, he made at the Casino, where he bivouaced for 300 nights to the delight of more than 300,000 persons who witnessed his performance.

50 years ago, 1960

Gliders may be zooming around inside of Lewiston Memorial Armory in the near future.

The Finance Board last night received from the Twin City Model Club a request for permission to use the armory about two Sundays a month during the winter season for glider flying.

The FB discussed possible damage to the armory and brought up a need for supervision, eventually tabling the request for more information.

25 years ago, 1985

Several Lewiston-Auburn area residents are among those elected Maine delegates to the White House National Conference on Small Business to be held in Washington D. C. next Aug. 17-21.

Business leaders selected include Bertrand Gagnon of Casavant Insurance Agency: David Gould of Gould and Scammon: James Longley Jr. of Longley, Whalen and Burke: and Roger Hewson of Sabre Yachts. They were elected Tuesday at the small business conference at the Augusta Civic Center.
