AUBURN —A Lewiston-Auburn holiday tradition is expanding to other concert halls in Maine.

Since the early 1990s, Dave Rowe and Phil House have performed a holiday concert at the First Universalist Church in Auburn. Through the years, the concert has undergone changes. The first four or five years, Dave was joined on-stage by his now deceased father, Tom, in their duo called Rowe by Rowe. The concert was actually the elder Rowe’s idea. After several years, Denny Breau joined in the fun, forming a trio called Turkey Hollow. Tom died in early 2004, and that year Dave began the Dave Rowe Trio, which has been part of the concert every year since, along with Breau and House.

“It’s a family affair in every sense,” Rowe said. “Phil and I have been performing this show together for so long, and now Denny has since 1998. It’s just like getting together with family and friends for a little music over the holidays. I don’t think any of us would miss this for the world.”

This year, besides their holiday show at the First Universalist Church, Rowe, Breau and House will perform at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15; and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16. The performance at the First Universalist Church will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18.

There will be a 5:30 p.m. pot luck supper at Skye Theatre starting at 5:30 in place of the usual preshow jam session. A preshow jam will be held in Unity, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Besides singer/guitarist Rowe, The Dave Rowe Trio includes bassist, Kevin O’Reilly, well known for his innovative approach to all styles of music; and fiddler Zach Ovington, who grew up in Tennessee and first hit the road alongside some of Nashville’s best. The trio, one of the area’s most popular folk groups, also tours nationally.

Guitar master and songwriter Breau has made a name for himself as much for his guitar skills as for his ease and gentle on-stage humor. Playing a six-string guitar, he first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching finger work.

House has been organist at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Auburn for more than 20 years. Originally from Bryant Pond, he traveled to the South, settling for a time in Tennessee where he spent time playing organ and piano in Southern Baptist churches. It was there that he learned and developed his unique stride piano style. House has recorded several solo piano CDs.

Tickets to all three concerts are $15. As always, tickets for the Auburn show will be available only at the door. For tickets to the other venues, call Skye at 562-4445 or Unity at 948-7469. The First Universalist Church is at 169 Pleasant St.; Skye is at 2 Highland Drive in Carthage; and Unity is at 42 Depot St., Unity.
