SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Bowdoin was two minutes away from securing a spot in the NCAA title match when Lynchburg scored a late goal in regulation and the game-winner with 16 seconds left in overtime for a 2-1 victory in Division III men’s soccer semi-finals Friday.
The Polar Bears (15-2-3) missed a couple of opportunities in the first half, but finally broke through in the 53rd minute. Sean Bishop played a 30-yard free kick into the box where Ben Brewster got a piece of it, sending it through traffic inside the right post, past a diving Michael Releford to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg evened the score with just 2:01 remaining in regulation as Scott Coleman struck from the right wing and deflected the ball off the head of the defender, Bishop, and past goalie Dan Hicks.
With 16 seconds remaining in overtime, a throw-in by Lynchburg came into the box from the right sideline, and Stephen Brooks headed the ball to the far corner of the goal, just beyond the outstretched hands of Hicks.
