CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Monday’s snowstorm dumped a foot of powder on the Sugarloaf ski resort and on Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley.

The early-season boost allowed Sugarloaf to increase its trail count to 17, with up to 25 trails expected to open by this weekend, spokesman Ethan Austin said Tuesday in a report.

“We weren’t expecting much more than a couple inches out of this storm, so you can definitely say that we were pleasantly surprised,” Austin said.

He said the resort had received 14 inches of new snow since Saturday, Dec. 4.

Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry got 4 inches of snow in Monday’s storm, spokeswoman Darcy Morse said Tuesday by e-mail.

Tuesday morning’s snow report for the Newry resort listed 32 trails open and the addition of another five by the weekend.

Monday’s snowfall ushered in colder temperatures, allowing the resorts to make or to continue making snow.

Austin said Sugarloaf had more than 105 guns running on eight trails and expected to expand that later this week.

Weather forecasts, he said, were predicting temperatures in the single digits on Wednesday and Thursday.

“With a foot of new snow this morning the skiing was just incredible, and with great snow-making conditions all week we should be in store for a good weekend,” Austin said.

Warmer temperatures last week forced the Rangeley ski resort to delay its opening day from this weekend to Thursday, Dec. 16, Saddleback Marketing Director JoAnne Taylor said Tuesday.

“We were not able to make snow because of the temperatures last week, but we’re pumping out the snow now,” Taylor said.

Another snowstorm swept in Tuesday morning, causing some whiteouts from Dixfield to Wilton but little accumulation.

Emergency personnel dispatchers in Franklin and Oxford counties said no accidents occurred on roads due to the storm.
