MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — The sheriff in Maine’s easternmost county is crossing swords with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Director Roy McKinney.
Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith is calling for McKinney’s ouster. In an e-mail, he says McKinney has both covered up and allowed misconduct.
Asked about the e-mail, Smith told the Bangor Daily News that the MDEA is a “rogue agency.” He cited several incidents including an agent’s misuse of a stun gun, $3,000 in missing drug buy money and a video that surfaced showing an agent flash his badge, drink some beer and then drive away.
Maine Public Safety Commissioner Anne Jordan disagrees. She describes McKinney as “an incredibly well-respected and highly qualified MDEA director.”
