SOUTH PARIS — Unlike the majority of the jails in the majority of other Maine counties, the Oxford County jail is by no means overcrowded.
There are now 22 occupants of the cells, 21 of whom are prisoners. The other is a seven-months old baby, the child of a woman bound over on an assault charge. Besides this woman there are three other women. One is in jail on a nuisance charge, and the other two on the charge of keeping a house of ill fame.

County Civil Defense Director Normand J. Vermette announced yesterday that Lewiston High School will receive $250 from the federal government to construct an air raid shelter.
Vermette said the type of shelter to be built will be chosen from plans included in a booklet on construction of home shelters, and the work will be done by the manual arts students. These books are available to area residents, and the director pointed out that it costs very little to build an adequate fallout shelter.
