WATERVILLE — Courtney Anderson scored her 1,000th point in the opening minutes of the second half as Leavitt rolled to a 78-18 victory over Waterville in KVAC girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
Courtney Anderson’s recorded 26 points, including four field goals from 3-point range for the Hornets (2-0). Kristen Anderson also provided some serious offense with 20 points.
Adrianna Newton and Sara Frost pitched in with 10 rebounds.
Emily Karter led all Panther (0-2) scorers with six points.
Mt. Blue 67, Lawrence 28
FAIRFIELD — Mt. Blue had three players in double figures and erupted for 21 points in the second quarter, as the Cougars raced away to a 67-28 romp over Lawrence in a KVAC girls’ basketball matchup.
Gabby Foy and Jillian Perron led the Cougars (1-1) with 12 points each, while Miranda Niceley chipped in with 11 in a well-balanced attack.
The Bulldogs were led by Diane Spaulding and Debra Armour with eight points apiece.
Jay 49, Mountain Valley 42
RUMFORD — Beth Moore erupted for 25 points and sank a flurry of late free throws for Jay in a 49-42 MVC girls’ basketball victory Tuesday over Mountain Valley.
The game was tied at each quarter checkpoint before the Tigers (1-1) opened up a 10-point lead.
Chrissy Briggs hit three of her five 3-pointers in the final period for the Falcons (1-1), whittling the deficit to four. But Jay’s advantage from the free-throw line was too much for Mountain Valley to overcome.
The Tigers were 19-for-37 from the line, compared to the Falcons’ 2-of-6.
Briggs finished with 23 points for Mountain Valley.
Richmond 48, Buckfield 25
BUCKFIELD — Brooke Lancaster poured in a game-high 15 points to lead Richmond to a 48-25 victory over Buckfield in EWC girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
Brie Snedeker and Jamie Plummer chipped in for Richmond with seven points apiece.
The Bucks (0-2) were paced by Sami Jones with an 11-point performance.
Rangeley 41, Greater Portland Christian 35
PORTLAND — Junior forward Chantal Carrier navigated the way with 15 points as Rangeley cruised to a 41-35 victory over Greater Portland Christian in girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
The Lions (1-1) held a slight lead, 20-18, at halftime. But the Lakers (2-0) surged in the opening minutes of the second half as Emily Carrier and Sierra Machacos sparked an 18-11 run.
Robyn Waugh paced the Lions with a team-high 14 points in the losing effort.
Winthrop 34, Monmouth 27
WINTHROP — Winthrop (1-1) bounced back from eight-point deficit after the first half with stellar defense as the Ramblers pulled off 34-27 victory over Monmouth (1-1) in a girls’ basketball game Tuesday.
The Ramblers’ Nikki Scott, Kelsey Mason and Sasha Flaherty all scored eight points.
Winthrop’s defense in the second half held the Mustangs to just seven points, while the Ramblers erupted with 14 in the final stanza.
For Monmouth, Daisi Poole had the game-high nine points.
York 60, Gray-NG 37
YORK — Stephanie Gallagher rang up 20 points as York held Gray-New Gloucester (0-2) to just 11 points in the first half and squashed the Patriots, 60-37, in a girls’ basketball game Tuesday.
Niki Taylor scored 15 points and teammate Emily Campbell added 10 for the Wildcats (2-0).
By the end of the third period, York led 50-21. The Patriots scored 16 points in the final quarter, with Meghan Dehetre leading the way with eight points.
Cape Elizabeth 33, Poland 30
CAPE ELIZBETH — With less than five seconds remaining in regulation, Poland attempted a game-tying field goal from 3-point range, but Cape Elizabeth held on for the 33-30 triumph in WMC girls’ basektball action Tuesday.
Both squads played great man-to-man defense as each team struggled to score.
Junior forward Kayla Raftice sank five baskets, including two treys, to lead the Capers (2-0) with 12 points. Emily Donovan chipped in with nine points, while Marlo Dell-Aquila added eight.
Sophomore guard Britina Maheux led the Knights (0-2) with 11 points, while freshman guard Emily Bolduc assisted with seven points, four rebounds and five steals.
Edward Little 50, Cony 45
AUGUSTA — Miranda Martin nailed a pair of free throws with five seconds left in regulation to lift Edward Little to a 50-45 victory over Cony.
Frankie Lally led the Red Eddies (1-0) with 13 points, while Martin and Ashley Arnold each chipped in with 10. After trailing by seven at the half, EL used a 16-9 run in the third frame to gain control.
The Rams (1-1) were paced by Melanie Guzman with 11 points, while Mia Diplock chipped in with 10.
Morse 77, Oxford Hills 35
BATH — Nikoline Osterguard led a group of four players in double figures Tuesday as Morse hustled to a 77-35 rout over Oxford Hills in KVAC girls’ basketball action.
Osterguard finished with 22 points for the Shipbuilders (2-0), while Emma Block chipped in with 20, Tarra Burr tallied 11 and Katie Hennrikson added 10.
The Vikings were paced by Alex Rowe and Chrissy Lewis with eight points each. Morse jumped out to a 23-7 advantage in the first frame and was never challenged.
Boothbay 28, Lisbon 25
BOOTHBAY — The Boothbay girls’ basketball squad out-gunned Lisbon 11-3 in the first frame, then held on for a narrow 28-25 victory in a MVC nailbiter.
Allison Crocker led the Seahawks (1-1) with eight points, while Alex Clark chipped in with six.
The Greyhounds (1-1) were led by Jessica Campbell with seven points, the only player to tally more than five. Lisbon outscored their opponent by five in the final frame but came up just short in the final tally.
Dirigo 46, Carrabec 42
DIXFIELD — The Dirigo girls’ basketball squad used a 23-9 run in the second frame to pull out a narrow 46-42 victory over Carrabec in an MVC tilt Tuesday.
Hannah Knight led the Cougars (2-0) with a game-high 20 points, while Alyssa Wade chipped in with 13.
Trailing by three after the first, Dirigo revved up the offense and took control.
The Cobras (1-1) were paced by Jocelyn Jackson with 14 points, while Becca Bergeron chipped in with 10 points.
Erskine 53, Lewiston 40
SOUTH CHINA — Junior guard Jessica Souther nested 16 points to lead Erskine to a 53-40 victory over Lewiston in KVAC girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (0-2) cut the deficit to five points on two occasions in the third quarter, only to slip further behind in the final frame. Freshman forward Brie Wilson scored 10 points and hauled down eight rebounds for Lewiston.
Bridgett Humphrey chipped in with 10 points for the Eagles (1-1).
Madison 64, Telstar 19
BETHEL — Samantha Bruce scored 15 points and Lyndsay Weese added 14 to lead Madison to a 64-19 win over Telstar.
Emma Davis carried the load for Telstar (0-2), scoring 13 of the Rebels’ 19 points.
Hockey
Cape Elizabeth 6, Lewiston 4
LEWISTON — Lewiston watched its three-goal lead disappear over the next two periods as the Blue Devils’ offense fell silent, allowing Cape Elizabeth to slip away with a 6-4 victory in a girls’ hockey game Tuesday at the Colisee.
The Blue Devils scored four goals in the first period, with Sara Marden turning in a hat trick. Mikaela St. Laurent added the other goal.
But Lewiston watched helplessly as the Capers reeled off five unanswered goals over the next two periods. Cape scored two unassisted goals in the second period before adding another two in the final stanza.
