FARMINGTON — The Farmington Historical Society has announced this year’s coffee mug, the third in a series of five. The mugs feature the art work of Farmington historian and artist C.R. “Bob” Tyler.
This year’s mug showcases the “Little Red Schoolhouse.” The print shows the schoolhouse as it sat on the corner of the Wilton and Red Schoolhouse roads for 154 years. The brick house in the background, built prior to 1800 and which is still standing, and the schoolhouse are part of the original lot No. 8, which belonged to Ephraim Butterfield.
The schoolhouse was built circa 1852 and served the Butterfield District, later named the Briggs District, and District 14, one 31 school districts in Farmington. The school closed in 1957 and after this date, the building served multiple purposes, including a museum until 2006. The schoolhouse was moved in 2006 to the fairgrounds and is still a one room schoolhouse museum, hosting many school groups and visitors throughout the year.
This is the third mug in a series of five featuring Bob Tyler’s artwork. In 2008, the “Snow Roller on Main Street” and in 2009, “Contrast Between Standard and Narrow Gauge Engines” were highlighted.
Tyler was born in Portland in 1918 and grew up in Farmington. He attended Vesper George School of Art in Boston and worked for printers Knowlton and McLeary Co. for 35 years. He was a longtime historical society member. Tyler died in 2000, leaving a legacy of Farmington’s history captured in his artwork.
The mugs are available at the Sugarwood Gallery, Calico Patch and The Chocolate Shoppe in downtown Farmington. They will also be available on Saturday, Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 at the Titcomb House museum during the wreath sale, located on Academy Street.
