GRAY — Gray-New-Gloucester limited Freeport to two points in the second quarter to assume command en route to a 47-21 victory over the Falcons in an WMC girls’ basketball game Saturday.

The Patriots led 8-4 after one period, but turned up the intensity in the second quarter with a 15-2 run.

Haylee Cote led Gray-NG (1-2) with 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Alicia Valente and Rachel Edson chipped in with nine points each.

Buckfield 48, Calvary Chapel 26

ORRINGTON — Sami Jones and Caitlin Henderson combined to outscore the entire team for Calvary Chapel to lift Buckfield to a 48-26 victory.

The Bucks (1-3) grabbed a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and slowly pulled away from there.

Jones finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Henderson scored 14 points and cleaned up the glass with 13 rebounds.

Jessica Owens led Calvary Chapel (1-2) with 11 points.

Rangeley40, Valley 32

RANGELEY — Emily Carrier poured in 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to send Rangeley to a 40-32 victory over Valley on Saturday.

After a 10-10 deadlock after the first stanza, the Lakers (3-0) began to break away to take a 19-14 and 30-21 leads following the middle two quarters. Jenney Abbott chipped in with seven points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Cindy Schultz led the Cavaliers (3-1) with 12 points.

York 72, Poland 32

YORK — York quickly opened up on Poland and built a 21-point lead in the first half as the Wildcats ran off with a 72-32 victory in a girls’ basketball game Saturday.

Niki Taylor scored 17 points, teammates Chelsea Morley and Stephanie Gallagher each scored 13 and Emily Campbell added 11 for York.

Sophmore guard Bertina Maheux scored 14 points and hit four 3-pointers as the winless Knights (0-4) struggled against undefeated York (4-0).

Boys’ basketball

Livermore Falls 43, St. Dom’s 35

LIVERMORE FALLS — Senior center Mike Armstrong had an excellent outing, scoring 19 points and hauling down 11 rebounds to lead Livermore Falls to a 43-35 victory over St. Dom’s in boys’ basketball action Saturday.

The Andies (2-1) performed well in a strong defensive battle in the second quarter, turning a 17-6 run into a 25-13 hafltime lead. Senior forward Mike Castonguay also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Joe Bryant and senior guard Zack Johnson scored 10 points apiece for the Saints (1-2), while Bryant had two treys amid his four field goals.

Gray-NG 77, Freeport 50

FREEPORT — Adam Jensen piled up 26 points and slam dunked the ball twice as Gray-New Gloucester dunked Freeport, 77-50, in a boys’ basketball game Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots (2-2) held a 42-29 lead at the intermission and never looked back as Josh Farynaz helped out with his 18 points.

For Freeport, Kyle Strovenski dropped in 14 points and Josh Weirich added 12.

Rangeley 73, Valley 61

RANGELEY — Rangeley came on strong in the first half and never let up as the Lakers cruised to a 73-61 victory over Valley.

Zeke Hall poured in the game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds and made four assists during his crusade. Alex Morton joined in the frenzy and scored 20 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and was also credited with four assists. Reagan Sargent helped out with 10 points and his two 3-pointers.

By the end of the first half, the Lakers were heading in the right direction with a 36-29 lead.

For Valley, Carrington Miller and Seth Steven each scored 15 points, with Steven pulling down six rebounds. Sam Mathieu had eight rebounds and 12 points.

Calvary Chapel 44, Buckfield 41

ORRINGTON — Clay Lawrence tossed a team-high 12 points to lead Calvary Chapel to a 44-41 victory over Buckfield in boys’ basketball action Saturday.

Lawrence recorded four field goals and three free throws, including a 3-pointer for the Sabers (2-1).

The Bucks (1-2) battled fierce to overcome a 31-26 third quarter deficit, but failed to make up enough ground.

Senior center Kasey Robertson provided a game-high 13 points, while Alan Hedrick scored 12 points and Austin Dooley added 10 points for Buckfield.

St. Dom’s 5, Thornton 4

BIDDEFORD — Senior wing Alex Parker notched the game-winning goal in the third period to lift St. Dom’s to a 5-4 triumph over Thornton Academy in boys’ ice hockey action Saturday.

Sophomore wing Dakota Keene scored a natural hat trick for the Saints (2-0) with a goal in the first period and a pair in the second, tying the game at 4-4 on a power play at the 10:39 mark.

Senior center Jon Pate provided a goal and an assist for the Trojans (2-2).

Goalie Jay Finch made 21 saves for Thornton, while Austin Christopher earned his first varsity win in net with 22 saves for St. Dom’s.

Lewiston 10, Maranacook 0

LEWISTON — Senior forward Ben Wigant popped the net on four ocassions as Lewiston grabbed a 10-0 shoutout victory over Maranacook in hockey action Saturday evening.

The Blue Devils (2-0-1) were absolutely solid on defense and special teams. Lewiston scored five of their 10 goals on power-play opportunities. Senior forward Sam Cloutier scored three goals and an assist, while Colt Steele added one goal and three assists to his credit.

EL 3, Poland/Gray-NG 2, OT

AUBURN — Freshman forward Travis Lowell scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Edward Little edged Gray-Poland/New Gloucester 3-2 to clinch the championship in the 17th annual Gipper’s Holiday Classic in hockey action Saturday evening at Ingersol Arena.

The Patriotic Knights secured a pair of first period goals from Adam Healy and Devin Goyette.

The Red Eddies trailed 2-0 until the final five minutes of the contest. Jared Pelletier and Dylan Nadeau stepped up to the ocassion with a goal each to send the game into overtime.

The Red Eddies killed a pair of overtime penalties before Lowell netted the game-winning goal.

Goalie Matt Ouellette made 24 saves for Poland/Gray-New Gloucester, while Rich Belanger turned away 14 to earn the win in net for Edward Little.

Girls’ hockey

Yarmouth 4, Leavitt-EL 3, OT

YARMOUTH — Arie Potter scored the game-winning goal 6:53 into an eight minute overtime frame as Yarmouth secured a 4-3 victory over Leavitt/Edward Little in girls’ hockey action Saturday.

Taylor Landry provided the Red Hornets with a pair of goals, while Sabrina Lapointe pitched in with a single tally in the losing effort.
