AUBURN — The First Universalist Church of Auburn has awarded its Rose Window honors to Toby Haber-Giasson and Ron Spofford, whose efforts have made a significant impact on the health and vibrancy of the church.

The annual award cites members who have been outstanding models of Unitarian Universalist principles and recognizes their contributions to the faith community.

Haber-Giasson has taken on numerous tasks for the church. She helps run the monthly Open Mic and Jam and Poetry Slam. She is also one of the co-founders of the UU Theatre, which explores social justice themes.

An advocate for networking, Haber-Giasson has been a key leader of Auburn UU’s social justice endeavors, helping to connect with immigrant farmers and environmental leaders. She also serves as the church public relations representative.

Haber-Giasson has served the congregation as president for two terms, as well as a delegates to three UUA annual gatherings where she also served as an on-site reporter to help with coverage of events for publication.

Spofford most often can be seen and heard lending his voice to the church choir. He also works behind the scenes to assist other church members in accomplishing a  variety of tasks.

Spofford gathers Sunday food donations and delivers them to Trinity Jubilee Center each week. For a number of years he also led and coordinated the church’s involvement in the ecumenically-sponsored New Year’s spaghetti dinner at Trinity.

Spofford traveled to New Orleans with a mission group in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to help with recovery and rebuilding efforts. He was recently a performer in the church production of “The Katrina Project,” which memorialized the fifth anniversary of the Gulf Coast tragedy.

Spofford helps at the Open Mic and Coffee House, often performing a song or reciting an original piece of writing. He is a co-leader of the Events Committee and assists the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
