100 years ago,1910

Thomas Murphy of Lewiston has just returned from Seattle where he went to visit his son, John F. Murphy, a former Lewiston boy and a graduate of Bates College, who has just been elected prosecuting attorney of King county, Seattle. Mr. Murphy was born in Lewiston 34 years ago and was educated in this city and at Holy Cross College of Worcester, Mass. For several years he was private secretary to U.S. Sen. William P. Frye of Lewiston. For the past five years he has been located in Seattle.

50 years ago, 1960

An important meeting of the Lewiston Centennial Celebration Commission is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at which time Normand J. Vermette, celebration chairman, expects to have the date set for the week of anniversary events. This is expected to be next fall.

The chairman said he already has started to give out committee assignments for the various events to be held in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Lewiston as a city.

25 years ago, 1985

In the wake of a decision by St. Mary’s Hospital to close its nursing school, officials of Central Maine Medical Center said Friday they are studying ways to expand their program to provide baccalaureate degrees in nursing.

CMMC President William Young Jr. said the hospital began examining the future of its nursing program about 18 months ago. The program now offers a two-year associate’s degree and prepares students to take state examinations to become registered nurses.
