LEWISTON — Area veterans organizations and residents met recently at Veterans Memorial Park to observe the anniversary of two terrorist attacks.

In the terrorist truck bombing of the U.S. Marines barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, 241 U.S. Marines and U.S. Naval personnel lost their lives on Oct. 23, 1983. The terrorist bombing of the U.S.S. Cole saw 17 crew members lost on Oct. 12, 2000, at the refueling docks in Yemen.

The program opened with singing of the national anthem by all.

Douglas Taylor gave the invocation and the details of both terrorist attacks, then those present sang the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy service songs.

State Rep. Peggy Rotundo addressed the group and Jerry DerBoghosian, president of the USS Canberra Association, read a special proclamation.

The program closed with singing of “God Bless America” by the assembly.
