Drill: Figure eights standing/skating
Purpose: Work on hands and puck handling ability
Equipment needed: 2 cones
Part 1: Start the drill by putting both cones shoulder width. Facing the cones proceed to do figure eights with the puck around both cones while standing still. Use both backhand and forehand.
Part 2: Spread cones 6 feet apart (approximately 2 kids sticks apart). Skate in figure eights around the cones using tight turns while stick handling. Also, try to do figure eights while keeping the puck only on the forehand. This will work on puck control and body position.
Part 3: Try all of the above with a cut-off piece of PVC pipe. Slide the pipe onto your stick and use your bottom hand on the pipe. This will force your top hand to do all the work and condition you to always use top hand while stick handling.
Enjoy the drill, and have fun learning!
