SUMNER — Bill Glass, president of Haitian Outreach Ministries, gave a video presentation on his recent visit to Cite Soleil, an area in Port-a-Prince to the Saturday night supper crowd at East Sumner Congregational Church.

Bill and Linda Glass have made frequent visits to Haiti since the earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, literally moved the earth two meters, resulting in 300,000 deaths and leaving a million homeless.

Bill said Haitian Outreach Ministries has built 103 new homes since the earthquake. Last year he said there were 90 churches in the U.S. and Canada participating in the outreach ministries, and now they have 450 churches involved.

Samaritan’s Purse, founded by Franklin Graham, has been a constant force in the rebuilding. Glass said that Graham’s organization has supported the rebuilding of a new clinic in Cite Soleil with a quarter of a million dollars.

Glass showed pictures of volunteers helping the natives rebuild homes. The concrete for the foundation was mixed in a mud trench, then passed in buckets relayed by volunteers to the foundation site.

The film showed chlorine being added to buckets of water. Glass explained that the cholera outbreak was not getting better as long as people were washing their clothes and dishes in dirty water. The drinking water was being filtered, but all other chores were being done in dirty water.

The outreach group also looks out for children who may be starving and follow up on getting the food where it is needed.

Glass showed a picture of the only library in a school in Port-Au-Prince, which is at the Cite Soleil school. Glass was quick to point out something very special in the library. World Book has published the first encyclopedia in French.

“Why do we do this?” Glass asked, then answered his rhetorical question. “We think we are being a part of what God has called us to do.”
