It is said that good progress is being made toward the organization of a company to manufacture artificial ice in Lewiston. One who claims to know something of the plans says that an artificial ice plant will be in operation in this city within a short time.

50 years ago, 1961

Bills calling for the survey of the need for a third bridge between the Twin Cities and for a vocational-technical institute in Androscoggin County were filed at the legislature yesterday by Rep. Louis Jalbert of Lewiston.

The recent Edwards-Kelcey Traffic Survey clearly indicates the need for a third bridge between Lewiston and Auburn, said Jalbert. The bill is not new and the survey had been made before, but this does not mean that the project should be allowed to die.

25 years ago, 1986

Frances Abbott, chairwoman of the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities, has announced that Lewis J. Alessio has been selected to serve on the commission’s Theater Panel for 1986.

The five-member panel’s duties include evaluating the major theater companies in the state, advising on grant proposals and recommending policy directions.

Alessio founded the Maine Acting Company in 1978. Alessio, from New York, was previously associated with the Theatre at Monmouth for six years as an actor, program director and teacher.
