AUBURN — In a span of less than 10 minutes, the St. Dom’s hockey team showed just what kind of night it was going to be Saturday.
The Saints roared out to an early lead against Edward Little and barely looked back in a convincing 10-3 win.
St. Dom’s scored three goals in the first 9:07 and were up 6-1 in the second before the Red Eddies attempted a comeback. That was short-lived as the Saints scored a late power-play goal in the second and added three more in the final period.
“Overall, the offense, I was very pleased with,” said St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette. “We did a lot of things. We moved the puck around nice. We did a lot of good things on offense.”
Cody Rodrigue and Kyle Holtet each had a pair of goals for the Saints (6-1). Alex Parker had a goal and three assists while Cam Hainey and Dakota Keene each added a goal and two assists.
EL (4-3) got two goals from Cody Russell. Both those tallies came on back-to-back on power plays in the second period. It was during a stretch in which EL showed the most life and cut the deficit to 6-3.
“We got a little sloppy on the defensive side and penalties mounted up,” said Ouellette. “You give them two five-on-three power plays back-to-back and they capitalized.”
EL gave those opportunities back with four late penalties in the third. That halted the momentum, and the Saints made it 7-3 with a goal on the two-man advantage with 3:25 left.
The Saints added three more goals in the third, two on the power play.
“You’ve get to a point in the season where you have to keep playing hard the whole time,” said Ouellette. “It’s a 45 minute game. You realize that if you want to go far, you have to do things hard the whole way through.”
St. Dom’s scored just 5:59 into the game when Parker finished off a Hainey pass by cutting between two defenders. Spencer Martin added a shorthanded tally at 7:47, and Rodrigue scored off the rebound of a Hainey shot with 5:53 left in the first.
EL got one back when Dylan Nadeau scored with 3:19, but Chris Finlay, Rodrigue and Holtet all scored within the first 4:31 to build the 6-1 lead.
Penalties by Martin, Isaac Reed and Will Desmarais gave EL the opportunity to rally. Russell scored twice on the power play 10 seconds apart to make it 6-3.
EL then drew four straight minors from Travis Landry, Ben Johnston, Brendon Pelletier and Jared Pelletier. That allowed for a Keene goal on a Parker feed for the power play tally late in the second.
Hainey and Holtet each added power-play goals in the third and Reed also scored in the final period.
